The first, and perhaps the most obvious way to enjoy reborning is to become a reborner yourself! This pursuit, as you’ve learned, is most certainly not for the faint of heart. But if you have the interest, and determination to develop this skill, the challenge of reborning can bring very enjoyable rewards. Few joys can match the pride and sense of accomplishment you can feel after completing you’re very own reborn. Even if you aren’t quite ready to dive into making one from scratch, you have the option of purchasing a reborn kit. These kits can be purchased from artists websites, sites that sell reborn supplies, or even Ebay. If you are an aspiring reborner, why not look into one of these kits?

But what if you love reborns, but don’t have the time, determination, etc. to become a reborner yourself? Then why not start collecting reborns? Many people find this hobby to be just as satisfying as reborning. There are plenty of web sites devoted to reborn doll collecting, just use a search engine like Google to easily find some of these sites. It can be quite enjoyable to become a sort of “reborn expert”, and help other reborn enthusiasts by sharing your knowledge and experience.

Even if you don’t have the resources to be a reborner, or collector, you can still become a reborn enthusiast or expert. Reborning is still a pretty new thing, and there are a lot of people who haven’t ever heard of reborns. Why not share your enjoyment of this lovely art with others? Let them know where they can find out more information and resources on this great hobby. Part of what makes reborning so enjoyable is the tight knit community surrounding it. You can easily become part of that community!

The highly talented crafters that create reborn dolls are know as reborners. Although  reborning originated in America, the hobby has gained, and is continuing to gain, popularity throughout the world. Basically, any crafter who has the interest, resources, and talent to create a reborn can become a reborner.

In fact, “reborn kits” can even be purchased that allow an armature reborner to assemble their own reborn doll. These kits differ in the amount of paint, assembly, etc. required to complete the reborn. (We’ll talk more about reborn kits and other reborn accessories in a subsequent post.)

If you are interested in learning more about the reborners themselves, your best resource is often a Google search, using terms like “reborns”, “reborners”, “reborn artists”, etc. Or if you have a particular artist in mind, you can of course do a Google search for their name. There are quite a few professional reborners out there, and most of them have websites with information about themselves and their reborns. These sites also most often contain picture galleries of that artists work.

If you are interested in seeing a particular artists work in person, check their website for mention of any arts and crafts shows or similar events they may be appearing at. These events can be a great way to interface with these amazing artists.

Well, that just about covers it. We will briefly examine the huge amount of work that goes into creating one of theses very lifelike dolls, a process known as “reborning”. This is not a step-by-step tutorial, just a quick overview of the whole process, to help you understand what sets newborns apart from a standard doll. Keep in mind that there is no single “right way” to craft a reborn and most reborners have developed their own unique methods. Now, let’s begin.

It might surprise you to know that a reborn starts out as a standard vinyl baby doll. Berenguer brand dolls are a popular choice among reborners. It is first stripped of paint, coating, etc., leaving just the plastic body. The dolls limbs and head are removed if a cloth body will be used.

The reborner then has to apply several coats of paint or dye. They not only have to mask the orange hue of the plastic, but must also create a convincing skin tone, which can require the use of several different colors. Some artists also choose to mimic the look of veins or blotching to add to the realism.

At this point the reborner can start adding more touches like more realistic eyes, molding facial features like nostrils, and painting details like eyebrows and fingernails. Fake eyelashes are also added.

Hair can be added to the reborn by either purchasing a wig, or rooting mohair or even real human hair into the dolls head with a needle.

The body of the doll is then filled with small plastic pellets. This gives the baby a more realistic weight and feel.

Other touches can also be included for added realism, like heating kits, sound boxes, etc. There are many accessories that the artist can decide to include or not include based on preference.

Lastly, all the parts are assembly and the baby can be clothed and accessorized as desired.

Whew! What a process and that was just a very, very basic explanation. You can now begin to imagine the amount of effort and skill that goes into one of these creations. Creating one reborn can take literally hundreds of hours! It’s should be no surprise then that most professional reborners can easily make hundreds of dollars from the sell of a single doll.

So just what is a reborn baby doll anyway?
Well, the simplest explanation would be that it is a standard vinyl baby doll that has been modified by an artist to look as close as possible to a real human baby. And if you look at some pictures of reborn dolls, I am sure you would agree that artists accomplish this goal quite well. However, there is a lot more to it than that. Reborn dolls have become quite popular of late, and seemed to have developed their own niche culture. There are many doll artists and collectors that deal exclusively with reborn dolls. They are also gaining popularity as gifts for expecting mothers, or mothers of newborns, to commemorate the birth of their child.

But why reborn dolls?
Simply put, there are quite a few artists now producing reborn dolls, because they offer a joy and challenge that is unmatched by other types of doll crafting. A lot of crafters and artists have become bored or gotten tired of making standard baby dolls and are now seeking out this greater challenge. These artists are referred to as “reborners” and the art of crafting reborn dolls is known as “reborning” (We’ll talk more about the reborners and their process in subsequent posts).

Reborn dolls have also become popular with doll collectors and enthusiasts for much the same reason. Standard baby dolls have obviously been around for a long time, and some collectors may feel that the field is stagnant. But reborn dolls are breaking new ground and giving these hobbyist a fresh new take on a beloved past time.
